Report: Newcastle cutting short Fun88 sponsorship to free up shirt inventory
English top-flight soccer club Newcastle United are in the market for a new front-of-shirt sponsor after negotiating an early release from their deal with Chinese sports betting brand Fun88, according to the I.

The Premier League outfit initially signed a deal with Fun88 in 2017, before inking a ‘long-term’ extension with the firm in July 2020. The initial contract was reportedly worth in the region of UK£6.5 million (US$8.1 million) per season.

However, the I newspaper reports the pair have agreed to part ways after the 2022/23 campaign. That will open the door for Newcastle to secure a more lucrative main commercial sponsor, following their takeover by Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund (PIF) last October. There has been speculation that the club will seek a pact with a large Saudi company such as the Saudia airline or energy firm Aramco.

In December, a temporary ban on owner-related sponsorship deals in the Premier League was lifted, although clubs are now reportedly required to seek approval on deals worth more than UK£1 million (US$1.2 million).

The initial block on such transactions was imposed in October and backed by 18 top-flight clubs following the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle.

The I reports that Newcastle are ‘more than comfortable’ with the latest rules, which will look to ensure commercial partnerships represent market value, and are confident of landing a deal worth significantly more than their current tie-up with Fun88.

Meanwhile, the I also reports that Newcastle are close to agreeing a deal with the Botswana tourist board for sleeve sponsorship this season. The club’s previous agreement with travel search engine Kayak expired at the end of 2021/22.

While moving away from the gambling industry should be well received by fans, a deal with a Saudi firm would only continue questions over the proximity of the kingdom to Newcastle. Last month, leaked images purporting to show Newcastle’s away kit for 2022/23 drew criticism given the white with green trim colour scheme was the same as the Saudi national team. Human rights organisation Amnesty International said wearing the colours would be “clear evidence” of sportswashing by the Gulf regime.
